Note: Android devices are manufactured by numerous vendors.  These vendors often customize their screens and settings.  The instructions here are generic.  If they don't exactly match your specific device, you can typically search Google for instructions for your specific device.

Update Android Device

To get the most out of your Android phone, you should download the latest available operating system.
Android Operating System (OS) must support version 10 and above

  1. Connect your device to a wifi connection
  2. Go to your list of apps and tap on "Settings."
  3. Scroll through the list and tap on "Software Update"
  4. Depending on the OS, you'll see Install Now, Reboot and install, or Install System Software. Tap it. Your phone will reboot.

Set Screen Lock (Mandatory)

You can set up a screen lock to help secure your Android phone or tablet. Each time you turn on your device or wake up the screen, you’ll be asked to unlock your device, usually with a PIN, pattern, or password. On some devices, you can unlock with your fingerprint or Face recognition.

Set or change a screen lock

Important: To ensure your automatic and manual backups are encrypted with your screen lock, use a PIN, pattern, or a password.

  1. Go to your list of apps and tap on "Settings."
  2. Scroll through the list and tap on "Lock Screen."
  3. To pick a kind of screen lock, tap "Screen Lock Type."
    • Note: If you’ve already set a lock, you’ll need to enter your PIN, pattern, or password to continue
    • You will have the option to choose from the following:
      • Pattern: Draw a simple pattern with your finger.
      • PIN: Enter 6 or more numbers. Longer PINs tend to be more secure.
      • Password: Enter 4 or more letters or numbers. A strong password is the most secure screen lock option.
      • If you’ve already set a lock, you’ll need to enter your PIN, pattern, or password before you can pick a different lock.
  4. Tap the screen lock option you’d like to use.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
